Unseen Miracles (John 2:10)

Even in the face of experiencing the goodness of God some people just don't get it.

Consider the master of ceremonies at the wedding at Cana. When he was given the newly created wine he marveled. But his marveling wasn't because of the miracle. He marveled at the at the the departure from customary etiquette. "What a great idea - serving the best wine until now!" He brought the bridegroom aside. "Most people do it 'this and that way. But you have mixed it up. How refreshing!"

Such is our witness to the world.

To some we are refreshing, people who live in an uplifting way outside the box. That's what they see. That's what that God has allowed them to see. (For now, anyway.) Others observe our actions and see far beyond the novelty of the expression. They see the One from whom our expressions originate. Some have eyes to see, other have yet to see.

We can never know who will see what. Our call is, like the servants, to simply live it out for all the world to see. Either way it's a blessing. The yet-to-be-seers have the joy of tasting a drop of New Wine while the servants have the inner joy and satisfaction of seeing God move in their midst, regardless of human recognition.

A note on Grace

Here's a quote from one of my favorite theologians, Olivier Clément:

"And if you do not succeed in "keeping the commandments," never consider yourself lost. Do not torment yourself in a moralizing or willful manner. Deeper still, beyond your shame and your disgrace, there is Christ. Turn to Him, let Him love you and bestow His strength upon you. There is no point in hammering away at the surface, the heart is what must change.

Your first task is not to try to love God but only to understand that He loves you. If love responds to love and you are awakened in the depth of your heart, then the very life of Christ, that is the breath of the Spirit, will arise within you. Now you have only to remove the obstacles, deviations, all the stones and silt deep within you that stop up the well-spring - though henceforth that will be your desire.

Once and for all, you will have to take a breath deeper than the air of this world, "breath in the Holy Spirit" as Gregory of Sinai says. And may this breath within you unite with, liberate and express the lament of creation, the hope of the cosmos..."

Getting Better All the Time?

There is a mis-belief that this world started bad and will end up good. "As we evolve," they say, "Our technology and global community experience will usher in a season of peace."

The Bible doesn't say that. It says we started good and we will end up bad. The planet is powered by Satan and he isn't stopping until the last day.

The good news is Jesus entered into our world. He penetrated the barrier of heaven with the sword of the cross. Ever since then heaven has been leaking through the spiritual fabric of our world - not that the designs of the enemy would be derailed per se, and not that we would begin the slow the thing down and eventually turn this place into Utopia. But that his peace, healing, encouragement, hope, purity, and power would be a balming agent in the midst of our distress. Through the Spirit Jesus greases the wheels of our experience so that even in the hardest of situations we can be assured of resurrection, his design of purpose within the hardship, and his presence as we invoke his power in prayer.

Herod in Me

When the infant Jesus was born on Herod's turf his whole world was rocked. He (Herod) was the King. This was his land, his territory, his heart. Now, with the birth of Jesus, everything would change. Herod chose not to bow to the new King on the block. Instead he rose up against Jesus and tried to kill him. It's a sad thing when two kings seek to reign over the same heartland. Someone's got to give. Herod died a few years later of worms. He chose not to bow.

We have similar battles. Christ was born in our heartland years ago and the turf wars still continue. Our flesh and His Spirit often rub us against the grain. It is a vain endeavor - to be the King. We can never snuff out, or kill, the Christ within us. He is here to stay.

We have choices. In my experience there is nothing sadder than a believer living in disobedience to the Spirit abiding within. People like that get grumpy. They become per-snippety people void of joy and the adventure of the pilgrimage. But a joyful believer is one who not only bows before the new King, but also gives Him his entire kingdom to reign and rule, as he sees fit.
